The Spectrum Chamber Music Ensemble was founded in 1986 by six members of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, with a goal of presenting three concerts of music for smaller ensembles to take place each season. Over the years the group has expanded to include other performers from the FWSO as well as faculty members from area schools and other local professional musicians. The original three-concert schedule has been expanded to include six performances yearly.

In the years since its inception, The Spectrum has presented an encyclopaedic collection of classical works for chamber ensemble, spanning the period from Bach and Vivaldi to the present. The unusually eclectic programming of the unfamiliar alongside standard repertoire is a reflection of the fact that the selections are chosen by each group for their pleasure as well as for the enjoyment of the audience.
